Traditional Management Practices and its Use of Tamarind (Tamarindus Indica L.) By Berta Community in Assosa Zone Northwest, Ethiopia

Abstract: Tamarindus indica L. (Tamarindus) belongs to the family leguminous (Fabaceae) and is one of the indigenous fruit tree species that traditionally contributes to food security, traditional medicine and ecosystem stability in sub-Saharan Africa. The purpose of this study was to document traditional uses and management practices of Tamarindus indica among the Berta community in the Assosa Zone. Focus group discussions, key informant interviews, semi-structured interviews and observation were used to collect data. Descriptive statistics were made to analyze the data using SPSS version 20 and Ms-excel software 2019. Among the study area overall, twelve main Indigenous uses (use categories) of Tamarindus indica were identified in each study district among selective study kebeles; including food, beverage, ethnomedicines for humans, ethnoveterinary uses, aesthetic uses, environmental amelioration, commercial, fodder, and for hanging beehives provided shade in homes, public place, for crops and livestock as well as cultural uses. Fruit pulp (30.4%) plant parts were the most commonly used tamarind product. The majority of respondents reported that deforestation, no planting, gold mining, fuel wood, lack of management, illegal cutting, and timber harvesting and forest fire threats to the tree population in the study area. Results can be used to support the sustainable use of Tamarinds indica in the study area, including in-situ and exsitu conservation from planting around the home area, commercialization and organization of market channels. Furthermore, the benefits from the Tamarindus indica tree need to be promoted to fully utilize its potential in improving the livelihoods of rural communities in the Assosa Zone.

Genetic Variability Analysis of Hot Pepper (Capsicum Annuum.L) Landraces at Haramaya University, Eastern Ethiopia

Abstract: Hot pepper is a globally important spice utilized for food flavoring, enhancement, and coloring, with a growing demand over time. In the 2023/2024 cropping season, this study aimed to assess the genetic variability among 19 landrace genotypes and one improved hot pepper genotype under semiirrigation conditions. Twelve quantitative parameters were evaluated using a randomized complete block design with three replications. Analysis of variance revealed highly significant differences (P ≤ 0.01) for all traits except days to harvest and fruit weight, which were non-significant. Coefficients of variation ranged from 2.92 for days to fifty percent flowering to 31.47 for number of fruits per plant, indicating substantial variability among accessions. Fruit length varied from 4.5cm (accession 229694) to 11.17cm (accession 229699), while fruit width ranged from 8.33cm to 31.4cm, and fruit weight from 11.25g to 24.88g. Accession 229697 exhibited the highest fruit number per plant (42.67), while M/fana showed the lowest (12.67), with a mean value of 23.64. Fruit yield per plot ranged from 0.26kg/plot (accession 229696) to 0.91kg/plot (accession 28337), with approximately 40% of genotypes surpassing the population mean (0.5935kg/plot). High phenotypic and genotypic coefficients of variation, along with high genetic advance and heritability, were observed for yield per plot, number of fruits per plant, and fruit width, suggesting potential for improvement through selection. Based on the study results, accession 28337 for yield per plot, accession 229697 for fruit number per plant, and accession 229695 for fruit width are recommended for future selection.

Abstract: The recent studies on different lectin and their agglutination activity have attained a distinct importance because of the wide range of applicability to problems of immune biology and clinical pathology. Now a days cancer is a fatal disease. It is wide occurrence in the people, especially in the labour class living in the polluted areas. The studies done on lectin shows that lectins are antitumor and anticancerous. So there may be correlation between increase or decrease in the lectin content and their hemagglutination activity with water pollution and in turn with their biological role. There may also be difference in their subunits and difference in their physiochemical properties due to water pollution. Reliable and economical quantification of micronutrients in diets of humans is critical component of successful epidemiological studies to establish relationships between dietary constituents and chronic disease. Legumes are one of the major dietary components consumed by populations worldwide. consumption of legumes is thought to play a major role in lowering breast and prostate cancer risks. Recently, it has been suggested that consumption of soyfoods may contribute to the relatively low rates of breast colon and prostrate cancers in countries such as China and Japan. Soyabeans contain a number of anti – carcinogens, and a recent National Cancer Institute workshop recommended that the role of soyfoods in cancer prevention be investigated.

Agro-Morphological Trait Characterization of Selected Soybean [Glycine Max (L.) Merr.] Accessions at Dabus in Assosa

Abstract: As study Soybean is the most important and widely grown legume crop worldwide with its multipurpose use and grows in the tropical, subtropical and temperate climates. In Ethiopia, soybean is becoming a high potential promising crop for the development of agricultural sectors. Targeting variety selection in its growing environments is the prime interest of any plant breeding program with respect to important parameters of morphological traits. Twenty soybean accessions were obtained from three geographic areas of Assosa and laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Higher phenotypic and genotypic variance was observed for grain yield. Branches per plant, pods per plant, seeds per pod and grain yield had higher PCV while plant height exhibited moderate PCV. Genotypic coefficient variance was high for pods per plant and grain yield whereas plant height and seeds per pod showed moderate GCV. Days to flowering and maturity, plant height, pods per plant and seeds per pod had high heritability whereas relatively moderate H2 was recorded for HSW and grain yield. Significant genetic variability in mean performance of all the traits under studied material indicated that genotypes have considerable amounts of genetic variation that could be used for further breeding programs in variety development. Finally, characterization of soya bean accession with genotype of GDM7 had highest 2478kg/ha grain yield and this accession is recommended for better adaptation and yield for cultivation of farmers’ in Assosa zone and similar agro ecology in Ethiopia.
